From the Founder and the CEO of ASI... Most people's opinion is pretty much cast about what the print magazine publishing business is today. It usually begins or ends with these common statements, “Kiss of Death!", "No Profit in them anymore!", "It's not worth it".. well, facts don't lie, IN the OVERALL picture that is the truth, it is what the print publishing business has become today. thanks to Internet, right? Well, actually that may be the truth, but not because of the Internet, it’s because of decades of laziness, short-sightedness and a lack of innovationfrom the print magazine industry themselves, who enjoyed the free ride for decades and generated huge profits without any real challenges. this irresponsibility and ignorance brought the truth TO THE SURFACE with the help of INTERNET’S fast SUCCESS AND THE REALITY OF IT'S NATURE. (I say this Because at ASI we think publishing is a responsibility that goes beyond business alone).
The big publishing houses were not be able to adjust to the challenges that Internet presented with its rapid revolution and digital publishing evolution. In fact what they did was add "iNSULT TO INJURY" by being self-serving as usual, falling even further into the abyss of their short-sightedness, when they started cutting corners, Cutting quality and costs in order to maintain THEir PROFIT MARGINs “Like the good old days". It was always the bottom line in the publishing business as usual. Even though anything is possible in this magnificent era we are in, including the evolution of publishing, and beyond.
The truth is that they were a very lazy thinkers during the decades leading up to the Internet revolution. with no internet to challenge them they did not needed to do anything to advance the evolution of the publishing business because they did have to, they were generating so much revenue without doing anything challenging or new. When the problems started to come to the surface Towards the end, the big publishing houses ended up finding the salvation in "the lies that everybody could agree on" “ABC lies that everybody agrees on-A common understanding in publishing world in the states” therefore generated profits still to some degree, maybe not as much as before, but it was enough for business as usual. The smaller publishing houses who followed the same production and publishing culture, but not being big enough to play the game with ABC suffered the most. And thus the common perception of the print-publishing industry of today was born "The Kiss of Death".
Right now I don't want to get into this more thAn I already have, Because I am here to offer solutions, not bore you with the complaints about the history of publishing, the old problems, the loopholes and the corruptions.
One of my good friends Caroline Newhouse and I (People in the publishing Industry will know who she is) were discussing this topic in depth in many long conversations. I was always arguing that the print magazines is a platform for Arts and Artists expressions, and should be treated as such. understandably, in a tailored fashion may have to be most of the times in order to separate the commercial venue of the magazines from the Art publications. Nevertheless, the real Artists should be creating them, rather thAn people who want to be an artist or THOSE who just enjoy the ivory towers of running magazines, AT THE publishers expense NO LESS. She understood this well because she was an artist herself, aND SHE CHALLENGED ME TO create a SOLUTION for IT PERSONALLY. but her establishment was too deep into THE dysfunctional business MODEL, as a common. despite S.i. Newhouse's personal efforts to change it otherwise. Nevertheless, he also forced to give in to ABC's business model!!
others were not exempt from this reality either, the name of the game was surviving for publishing, Which I would of wish IS to be different.
MY POINT ALWAYS WERE, AND STIL ARE, THAT PRINT MAGAZINES ARE ARTISTIC OPPORTUNITIES, AND SHOULD BE DONE AS AN ARTISTIC PLATFORM TO CONDUCT BUSINESS. THEY REPRESENT PERFECT OPPORTUNITY'S TO CONDUCT ARTS AND COMMERCE IN ONE PLATFORM. WHICH IS THE BASIS OF ASI PUBLISHING PHILOSOPHY AND BUSINESS MODEL.
HOWEVER EVEN THOUGH THIS MAYBE THE OBJECTIVES AMONG MANY BIG PUBLISHERS LIKE HEARST, HACHETTE, AND EVEN CONDE NAST (IT WAS THEN, I AM HOPING THAT IT STILL IS), BECAUSE OF THE SET-UP THEY HAVE, THE METHODS THEY FOLLOW AND THE STAFF IS WHAT IT IS, AND THEY DO WHAT THEY DO, IT NEVER ALLOWS THEM TO ACHIEVE THIS OBJECTIVE. AND AT THE END OF THE DAY, THIS BECOMES TOO IDEALISTIC, TOO MUCH OF A UTOPIA FOR THEM TO ACHIEVE IT, THEREFORE THEY FALL INTO THE SAME PLACE ALMOST ALL OF THEM FALLS. AND BECAUSE OF THIS, THE PUBLISHING WORLD SUFFERS IN THE END, IT BECOMES WHAT IT IS TODAY AND THE OPPORTUNITIES ARE GETTING LOT. SINCE NO ONE WILL EVER TAKE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF FAILING TO BE INNOVATIVE WHILE ENJOYING THE POWER AND THE GLORY OF BEING A PUBLISHER WITHOUT EARNING IT, THEY ALWAYS BLAMED THE INTERNET FOR THEIR FAILURES.
Well, this perception is going to change, right in front of your eyes now. with our proof, You are going to be offered A rather simple but fundamentally different approach to Print Publishing, production, and creation of A New age OF THE PRINT publishing business.
